Kelvin Thermal Energy Storage: How It Works

Kelvin TEMS technology converts inexpensive off-peak or renewable electricity into CleanHeat at >90% efficiency. This CleanHeat provides an alternate, parallel source of high temperature thermal energy to boilers and generators and increases their efficiency by enabling steady state operations. TEMS can be applied to virtually any process that combusts a fossil fuel in order to produce thermal energy.

Kelvin’s fundamentals have been tested and proven, and the company has multiple patents approved and pending. Noventa has been an early supporter and promoter of Kelvin TEMS and we are proud to have played an important role in scaling the technology. Through Noventa’s market contacts and support, Kelvin now has a host site at Cape Breton University and, as a result, is well positioned to attract financial support from government. Noventa will continue to play a big part in Kelvin’s growth as we assist with the rollout of the technology to our strategic district energy partners across North America.

Kelvin TEMS Reduces:
  1. Fuel usage: Each megawatt hour (“MWh”) of TEMS CleanHeat reduces the need to burn four gigajoules, or more, of fossil fuel in a conventional boiler.
  2. Emissions: The same single MWh of CleanHeat eliminates 200 – 400kg CO2, depending on which fossil fuel is being displaced.
  3. Carbon taxes: Typically projected at around $30/tonne, these will be reduced or eliminated, which adds up to tens – or even hundreds – of thousands of dollars annually.
  4. Electricity costs: While this varies considerably by jurisdiction, there is usually a significant difference between day and night rates. TEMS helps our clients leverage this difference.
  5. Capital expenditures on replacement turbines, boilers and related equipment.
  6. Deployment risk through phased implementation. Kelvin units can be easily arrayed in series.
